Reflection of ISTE (NETS-T)

  • So far in class (TIE 300), we've reviewed production software capabilities of MS Office (Word, PPT&Excel), and Blogs.
  • On this post I reflect on the 5 NETS-T, what they mean to me and how the reviewed production software helps meet the standards.

I thought NETS-T that would categorize MS Office: Power point was 1) Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity. My reflection of the 1st standard is for teachers to use their knowledge to connect with students in different aspects of technology. The teacher’s goal is to advance students. I thought the software met this standard because it discussed the importance of creativity, engaging students and the conceptual understanding that children should facilitate with technology. Power point is a great way to connect with students in all subject matter because there are so many different aspects to the software, such as graphs, charts, pictures, animations, colors, backgrounds, etc… This is why I think power point is great tool for the classroom due to the multiple ways to make a plain presentation exciting and eye catching.

I thought NETS-T that would categorize MS Office: Excel was 2) Design and Develop Digital –Age Learning Experiences and Assessment. My reflection of the 2nd standard is for teachers to use certain technology/software to help them teach, assess, design, develop and evaluate students. Also, to demonstrate an effective way to use technology to gather data regarding learning styles, strategies, goals, and or how students differentiate. I thought excel met this standard well because it focuses on data that is put into the software and the different ways to display, and use the information. You can use excel in many different ways, and in those ways you can design, create, display a variety of information that can help a teacher, student and parents to look at data. When we created a grade book, it was so interesting to see all the tools excel has to offer and how you can make your grade book your very own way by selecting colors, tables, graphs, etc… I also thought the way you can create an alert to highlight greater than, less than or equal to a number of your choice was cool; I thought to myself what does a teacher have to anymore other than insert data, and click a bunch of things.

I thought NETS-T that would categorize an Internet Blog was 3) Model Digital- Age Work and Learning. My reflection of the 3rd standard is for teachers to display a strong knowledge of technology and other resources. The goal for the teacher is to collaborate, communicate and model the importance of technology to students, parents, and staff. The reason why I picked the Blog for standard 3, because it demonstrates the digital age in technology and the significance to collaborate using the internet to communicate to students, parents and staff. I felt the blog was a great idea to communicate with parents, staff and students outside of school, for example if you have a class blog parents may feel more comfortable and also may have more time to comment or ask questions, or communicate to other parents.

Therefore, I thought The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) for The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) was significant to my reflections to MS Office: Power point, Excel and the Internet Blog because they were all relevant examples of technology/software.
